CONOR SAMMON is looking forward to getting among the goals again after sealing a season-long loan deal at Motherwell.

The 31-year-old forward joined the Fir Park club yesterday from Hearts, and he believes that his physical attributes mean that he will complement his new side’s style of play.

“I’m just looking forward to getting stuck in here, playing a lot of games, scoring a lot of goals, and just being a part of a successful season,” Sammon told the club website.

“I think the other strikers in the squad are similar. They’re physical, strong and quick, so I definitely think I can fit in here and I think my style of play will help me to have a good season here.

“And I’m looking forward to that, to training with the lads and to getting familiar with each other and how we play.”

Meanwhile, Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson is hoping that the Betfred Cup can be a springboard for another successful season for his side.

They kick off their campaign tonight with their group stage opener against Edinburgh City hoping to replicate their form in the competition from last season that saw them win four from four in the group stage and storm all the way to the final.

It proved the catalyst for what was a relatively successful season in Robinson’s estimations, with defeats to Celtic in the final of both cup competitions and just missing out on the top six only slightly tempering a campaign that exceeded all expectations.

“You have to remember where everything started last year,” Robinson said. “We had a terrific start – we won four out of four in the cup – and momentum is everything in football.

“So, it’s a vitally important game for us in terms of hitting the ground running.

“We’ve seen some strange results over the weekend, so we certainly won’t be surprised by anything.

“I went to watch Edinburgh on Saturday – they’ll be physical, and they’ll be a test. If you let teams like that play, there’s not a whole lot in it.

“We have to play at a real tempo and try and impose our way of playing on the game.

“I think it played a big part in what we did. Winning games at any level is difficult.

“We started the season with four wins from four. It gives momentum, gives players belief.

“We were able to keep working on things while winning games which is a lot easier than when you’re losing.”

Robinson declared himself happy with his squad after the capture of Sammon yesterday, with the only concern now keeping a hold of his best talent until the transfer window closes.

A bid in the region of £250,000 from Hull City for Cedric Kipre has already been booted out this summer, while an offer from Grimsby Town for Ryan Bowman was dismissed out of hand earlier this week.

“You think you’ve had three really good weeks of planning, and you’ve got the squad in that you want,” he said. You think you are quite content and ready to go, and all of a sudden, bids come in.

“We’re always going to be open to that, everyone has got their price unfortunately.

“It’s frustrating as a manager because you think you’re building something, only to be open to bids.

“But we knew that, we knew the parameters and we have had bids, but none that will be accepted or even close to being accepted.”
