All eyes will be on the prize at Hampden tomorrow afternoon but there will be covetous glances on one or two others too.

Kieran Tierney’s burgeoning reputation has ensured that the fullback’s name has taken on some lustre of its own. Atletico Madrid are the latest to join the player’s list of admirers with the La Liga side set to send a representative to Hampden tomorrow as the Spanish side keep tabs on the 20-year-old, with Spurs and Manchester United also watching Tierney repeatedly this term.

The player himself has maintained throughout the steady chat about his future that he is in no rush to quit Celtic, as the penning of a new five-year deal earlier this season underlined. And while that scenario is unlikely to change imminently, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has indicated that there will come a point when both the player and the club have a decision to make.

Stressing that Tierney still has much to learn at Celtic, Rodgers nevertheless accepted that there will be a natural ceiling on his development as a player and his potential to earn in Scotland compared to more illustrious leagues.

“I think he’s recognising it that if you’re playing over 15 years of your life and you’re at this club for whatever – another four or five years – he might feel that this is the happiest he’ll ever be,” said Rodgers. “Because when he leaves, he’ll arguably never be as happy but it’s your business.

“This is where football becomes a business. I hear now of so many players of years gone by, bless them, who’ve never earned the money and then people talk of loyalty and say, ‘Oh, they played this many games and blah, blah, blah’ and ‘what a player he was.’

“And then they say, ‘Oh he’s struggling at the minute.’ So, you have to look after yourself and that’s the modern world. But he’s a great kid and I’m sure he’ll be here for a few years yet.

“He’s living the dream and he’s not ready to end it now.

“There might be at some point. But I don’t think it’s now.”

Rodgers also believes that there has been continued progress in Tierney since his arrival at the club. In that respect Celtic’s own education in the Champions League is critical in allowing the Scotland internationalist to continue his exposure at the top level.

“I think he’s still learning and getting better and improving and I think that will only come if there is that point where he’s not.

“You understand that at times when you play with better players in certain times in your career you improve, there’s no doubting that. But at the moment he’s jumping from the youth team into the level of players we have here and he’s developing and improving.

“And he’s still doing that. When you are in that situation you can see development.

“It’s not about a club if you move, because he could move to a number of clubs if he wanted, it’s about it being the right club. I think at this moment in time in his life he’s at the right club. At a club like Celtic it’s quite natural, really, because it tends to be more that sort of moral issue that comes into it in terms of being on x amount at Celtic, another club can give him x and they give you that as a club. And then it’s very, very difficult for a young player, or any player, to then turn that down.

“If the player doesn’t want to go, it’s ok – you’ll not be pushing him out the door. The boy is 20, he’s playing for a huge club, he’s very, very happy and maybe in the future an opportunity will come for him that he’ll have to look at and the club will look at. But at this moment in time, it’s not even a conversation – and I speak with the boy regularly in my office and we chat and talk.”

There is a suggestion that Celtic would look towards a fee of around £30m for the left-back, something that Rodgers was unwilling to confirm. There is no question, however, that his value to Celtic is significant and despite the fact he was able to engineer a salary increase earlier this term it could be that there is another wage bump coming the player’s way as the Parkhead side look to keep him for as long as possible.

The speculation, though, is unlikely to go anywhere.

“Obviously there is a dearth of good left-backs,” he said. “With Kieran’s qualities and huge potential still as a young player, that is always going to draw the eyes of top teams.

“But it doesn’t bother him. He is developing very well and is loving every minute.

“It is about time with young players. I’m lucky that we have a squad with real value in it. We have a lot of young players who are still developing and emerging.

“Kieran has a great qualities. He has a really good temperament and that is getting better in big games. That’s important. Tactically, he understands the game much better.

“Physically, he can cope with any league in the world. He has got stronger and faster. He is playing at a big club.

“He’s a really exceptional young guy. He’s very stable, his home life and family are Celtic mad. He doesn’t let it affect him. You see his passion and love for Celtic.

“I’m sure there will be times over the next few years when that will be tested because obviously there will be a financial implication there that you have to think about, and he can’t not have that opportunity if it comes, to even think about it. But I don’t think it’s something that’s on his radar. He knows that to leave Celtic, ever, it has to be a win-win situation for him and the club so that people go ‘okay, we can see that one’.”
