TWO young brothers have launched a fundraising drive for a cause close to their heart after their grandmother suffered from a stroke.

Dominic and Joseph Murphy, both aged nine, are collecting money for the Stroke Association.

It comes after their grandmother Veronica, 70,suffered a stroke last December. She was left incapable of swallowing, walking, or talking. She sought treatment at the Queen Elizabeth hospital.

Thanks to a clinical trial featuring intense daily physiotherapy and specialised equipment, she has made significant progress.

Now the schoolboys want to reciprocate the care their grandmother received during her recovery and raise funds for the association.

Dominic is undertaking four cycles to four football stadiums in North Lanarkshire, while Joseph will be doing several litter picking expeditions.

Their father, Paul, said: “The effects of a stroke can be devastating, and my mum’s stroke has affected us all.

"Thankfully she has had great support from health professionals since her return home, and she is making great progress.

"I am so proud of both Dominic and Joseph. They have taken part in fundraising events before and have loved it. This is a really special challenge for them this year, as the boys adore their Nana, and love spending time with her."

Veronica was able to achieve her goal of climbing 15 stairs at home on her first day back, and she's now taking on daily chores with her husband's help.

Paul added: “Mum is incredible, and she has achieved so much since her stroke in December.

"Her passion is spending time with her seven grandchildren. Thankfully she is back spending time with them now which they are all really enjoying."

Catherine Corr, of St Brigid’s Primary school, recognised the brothers' initiative.

She said: "The challenge Dominic and Joseph are taken on is wonderful.

"We are very proud of their efforts, and I’m sure will their challenge will inspire other pupils to get involved in fundraising for good causes like this.”

Andrea Watt, relationship fundraising - Scotland for the Stroke Association, said: "We are thrilled with the challenges both Dominic and Joseph are undertaking to raise funds for the charity.

"The funds they raise will help the charity to support others affected by stroke, to let them rebuild their lives again.”
