VIDEO REPORT: No hiding place for red faces

by Brian Currie

THE Glasgow East by-election was a disaster for Labour from day one. It started with first choice candidate George Ryan deciding he wouldn't stand and ended with fifth choice Margaret Curran being humiliated by the SNP.

Party leaders' faces should be as red as Ms Curran's outfit last night when they analyse the reasons for the defeat.

Ken joins race to lead Labour

LABOUR back bencher Ken Macintosh has joined the race to lead Labour at Holyrood.

The MSP for Eastwood, East Renfrewshire will face deputy leader Cathy Jamieson and finance spokesman Iain Gray.

Former Glasgow City Council leader Charlie Gordon, who represents Cathcart at Holyrood, has also indicated he is seeking nomination.

Candidates are fighting to replace Wendy Alexander who resigned four weeks ago.

The contest was postponed so the party could focus its energy on backing Margaret Curran's candidacy in the Glasgow East by-election.

The timetable will be set by Scottish Labour officials on Monday and the likely candidates are now preparing the ground for a campaign that will continue into September.

Mr Macintosh represents a fresh start for the party not having been involved in previous administrations.

Some in the party have questioned whether he has enough support among MSPs.

Hols fall for BBC's Taylor

BBC SCOTLAND'S political editor Brian Taylor has been left battered and bruised after falling on holiday.

Mr Taylor, 53, was left with a broken arm, black eye and five stitches in a head wound after the fall on the last night of his holiday in Crete.

His injuries, said to include a scar on his brow, prevented him from appearing on TV for BBC Scotland's coverage of the Glasgow East by-election.

A source said he's working from home.

Suddenly they're saying they have to listen to voters, which is just as well because if last night's swing was repeated at a General Election Labour would only have one Westminster MP from Scotland.

Scotland Office minister David Cairns, who managed Labour's campaign, said: "We have now got to hear what the people have said, we have to reflect on that.

"The people have spoken and we need to demonstrate very clearly we are listening."

And Paisley MP Douglas Alexander, one of PM Gordon Brown's closest allies, said: "We will, of course, reflect long and hard on the result and try to understand the message that has been sent by the voters of Glasgow East."

Unfortunately for Ms Curran and potentially for the Prime Minister, they didn't listen early enough.

Labour's farcical start to its campaign ended with another farce when organisers decided they didn't need staff at polling stations to greet voters and point them in the right direction.

That would have reinforced the difference between Margaret Curran (Labour) and Frances Curran (Scottish Socialist Party).

But that decision was partly the reason for the demand for a recount because Labour claimed there had been an unusually high number of votes for the SSP candidate - she got 550.

After the recount, Labour had a dozen fewer votes than it had on the first tally.

Perhaps the most foolish risk for Labour was that it didn't need to have the election.

David Marshall resigned on health grounds but another Scottish MP, John MacDougall, who represents Glenrothes, is very ill and is seldom in the Commons yet there's no sign of a by-election there.

Then there are the gaffes which could be laid directly at the London strategists.

Chancellor Alistair Darling's decision to scrap the 2p a litre fuel duty increase planned for October allowed Alex Salmond to claim credit for it because of SNP pressure, while planned rises in vehicle licensing and low-key visits of top ministers to the constituency didn't do them much good either.

Neither Mr Brown nor Mr Darling were anywhere to be seen supporting Ms Curran while Alex Salmond seldom seemed to be away from his candidate's side.

Just as Holyrood ballot forms read Alex Salmond for First Minister, the ones for this campaign could have read Alex Salmond for Glasgow East.

The loss of its third-safest seat in Scotland and its 25th-safest in the UK follows hard on the heels of heavy defeats for Labour in Crewe and Nantwich and Henley.

That means Mr Brown will be facing recriminations today at Labour's policy forum in Warwick.

He and his Cabinet colleagues have repeatedly insisted losing in Glasgow would not force him to step down. But it is bound to fuel discontent among backbenchers and leave him open to greater mockery from Tory leader David Cameron.

However, he is unlikely to step down. Mr Brown succeeded Tony Blair as Prime Minister without the electorate having a say and it's unlikely the British people would stand for it happening again without a General Election.

But Labour knows its current election prospects are not good and one potential candidate to replace Mr Brown supposedly told his supporters that he's not a "kamikaze pilot".

Meanwhile, Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety said the vote was a message to Labour that it needed to do more "to meet people's aspirations", and he wasn't far wrong.

Nationally, Labour has lost its way. Locally, people can see council initiatives improving areas with big projects such as the Commonwealth Games.

But they can't see what the city's Westminster Labour MPs are doing for the city.

And while the SNP Government at Holyrood is ticking all the right boxes, a growing number of voters no longer know what Labour stands for. It needs an injection of new blood and talent at all levels.

Strategists should take note of Ms Curran's loser's speech.

She said: "I'm in politics because I'm driven to tackle poverty, inequality and to liberate the people of Scotland from those great injustices and my commitment remains as strong as ever.

"For me, fundamentally, Labour is a cause and not a career - and it is a cause I will continue to pursue."

Mason won council vote three times

JOHN MASON is originally from Rutherglen but has lived in the East End for 18 years.

The 51-year-old was elected as a Glasgow city councillor for the Garrowhill ward in 1998 and held the seat in 1999 and 2003.

He has led the SNP group on the council since 1999 and was elected in 2007 as councillor for the new ward of Baillieston.

Mr Mason is the SNP's longest-serving Glasgow councillor but he intends to quit to concentrate on his new job as an MP.

He lives in a tenement flat in Barlanark.

Born in 1957 he was brought up in Rutherglen and became an accountant after leaving school.

He worked for a nursing home group and then for housing associations.

As SNP leader on the council, he is a member of all its committees and sub-committees.

Because there are so many - around 35 - he admits that he can't get to them all.

In his blog he says: "Obviously I have to concentrate on the major committees but I do see it as my responsibility to keep an eye on everything and to be able to comment on any subject."

His hobbies are hill-walking, Scottish history and reading, and he is a member of Easterhouse Baptist Church.

He says: "My faith is really important to me.

"I want to see a healthy relationship between the different churches and other faith groups on the one hand and the city council on the other.

"However, I also believe it would be wrong for the council to be too close to any one group."

Is David cairns refering to the people his party have taken for granted for the last 50 years.
Who are they trying to kid, some parts of the area would give Beruit a run for it's money, they knew fine well these were the parts of the city that needed all the attention but still chose to igore them because they always voted for Liebour. At last they have awoken to the fact they were getting shafted by the Likes of David Marshall who instead of trying to fight for them, was fighting to get to the head of the expense fiddle queue and line his own family's pockets.
Well done the East end for having the guts to at least see if someone else has their interests at heart.

Too late did New Labour find out that their greedy, nasty and malicious policies, which alienate and victimise the vast majority of the people of Glasgow, would not be tolerated indefinitely.

From the vanity and incompetence of New Labour politicians at local level, through to abject failure at Holyrood and, ultimately, ignorance and disdain at Westminster level, New Labour has by design or negligence abandoned the people of Glasgow... on July 24th 2008 in a Tollcross Leisure Centre (which local New Labour politicians handed over to be run by a private, privileged quango) New Labour were found out and they were unceremoniously kicked out of Glasgow East.

There's definitely a communal sense of relief that this business is over and tonight I'll be raising a glass or two to John Mason and wishing him the best of luck for the future. I'm particularly chuffed about not having to listen to that wheel-biter Curran any more

So the penny is in free fall, the public have finally woken up to Labour and its alleged support for the ‘working classes’. Not before time, Labour have represented the East End both at local govt and national level since time and memorial, and look at the state of it.

Surely the days of labour getting voted in as a matter of course are over. To much spin, to much control, to much arrogance, to much of everything in fact. The old saying rings true ‘familiarity breads contempt’

Community Planning processes which ignore peoples views. Regeneration Companies which swallow up cash for little sustainable outcomes, Planning decisions which ignore the view of communities. CHCP’s which are accountable to nobody, and they wonder why they lost ???

Well the real winner last night was the scottish public, who have shown that there is an alternative to the Labour Party and their cronies. Well Done the people of the East End

Well I am glad the SNP won as Labour have just brought this country to its knees ,Snp do more in a year than Labour have done in 100's of years!

here we have people getting refused cancer treatment cos of financial issues and Gordon Brown goes to the middle east and promises 30 million of OUR money to the bloody Palestinians. What for? What have they ever done for us? They were out dancing in the steets when the twin towers got blown up and that arsehole is giving them 30 million of taxpayers money and people here cant get cancer treatment .Charity begins at home they should remember that!

When Labour are letting all the odds and sod's into the country and giving them money and now they are going to get folk like Joe Bloggs fae Glasgow to go for a means test to see if there is a possibilty he could get a job and save them £50 a week .Cos the poor Palestinians are needing it. it makes me so angry!

I am delighted that the people of Glasgow East have finally taken stalk and realised that their political concerns & grievances are due to decisions made and implemented a local level & have been for many years - under labour . Issues that eastenders have complained about - regardless of which government is at Westminster. I have & never will vote for independence, however, I am delighted that for the first time in my constituency we are Labour free. Let's see what Mr Mason can do for us!
Posted by: haud me back, glasgow on 11:49am Fri 25 Jul 08
Well said maxie : you have every right not to vote for independance but at least you had the sense to realise that SNP might well be given a chance to improve you life at a local level. What most rabid Liebour supporters don't seem to realise that if they vote against the Independance mandate then it won't happen but that doesn't mean you cant hold an SNP mp to account.

Labour were sending out letters to voters without paying the postage I got a card from the post office asking me to pick up a letter at the sorting office. I had a sneaky suspicion that labour were up to their old tricks, this was confirmed by my sister who also received a card, she paid a £1.20 charge
and was fuming when she realized Labour had ripped her off.
Will these robbing LABOUR b*stards never learn.
I cant stop smiling at the fantastic result for the SNP.Well done glasgow East labour got what they deserved.Well and truly humped.
Things can only get better.
Oh HAPPY DAYS.

Simple reason for that - folk will pay money to see monkeys in zoo's & safari parks.
Monkeys are intelligent ( don't insult them!)
And, monkeys are cute - Margaret Curran is a wolf in sheeps clothing, and rotten to the core.
Glasgow East escaped her & labour's cringeworthy web of deceit by the skin of their teeth.
Things can only get better.
Lets just hope Mason lives up to the expectations placed on him, and doesn't end up slack, and taken in by the corruption in Westminster like so many MP's there.
Who knows he may even talk Salmond into deciding where his loyalty lies ?

As, how can anyone be expected to carry two roles - MP & MSP whether he takes 2 wages for the work or not.

Just as with another SNP Councillor & MSP - Bill Kidd of Anniesland & Drumchapel who draws one out of the two wages & yet supposedly does two jobs.

This practice cannot be allowed to continue.

Surely the level of work involved, and amount of constituents & requests - meetings etc all expected doing two such high posted jobs is near impossible & does a disservice to the people represented.

Although, given the choice of SNP over labour I'd give SNP my vote without a shadow of a doubt.

Although i do not believe that last nights victory was a vote for independence. I do believe that labour are actually delivering the independence vote for the SNP. Labour's shameful abuse of theIR position in the west of scotland over the last 50 years is coming back to haunt them.

The fact that the SNP have shown the scottish public that there is an alternative to LABOUR. is fueling the sea change that we see happening.

Scotland has new hope today, not necessarily for independence, new hope that there is an alternative to the uncaring, remote, out of touch labour party which has abused its unassailable position (till now) in Glasgow over the last 5 decades.

Let Glasgow Flourish, well it just might now that the old order has been broken.

Two of your points are factually wrong:

i) Gordon Brown donated the money to *Israel*, not the Palestinians.

ii) The reports of dancing in the streets after 9/11 attacks were from *Pakistan*, not the Palestinians.

same old labour saying we will listen to the people but will not give a **** what they say. Blaming the current economic crisis for a well deserved snp victory mr brown was the chancellor for all those years surely he must have seen this coming. With the price of food going up broon's sage advice to the nation was don't throw your food away and the price will go down. That's alright if you can claim your messages on the expenses system while the rest of us have to pay through the nose for them. Just one of the many reasons why i voted for the snp

The thing is no more than a trained beast, as is the screeching banshee in red. They are incapable of listening and responding to rational thought. Both will mouth off the same load of B***s**t forever and a day, because that’s what they have been trained to do.
Hopefully we will get rid of Fr Cairns soon.

It is not acceptable for a political party to ignore certain areas and certain sections of society merely because they are solid voters for that party. I would suggest that decent people, who have done well out of life, are not too keen to accumulate wealth at the expense of other human beings. This is the reason that Labour have been supported by a wide spectrum of society in the past.

The Labour party, who supposedly stand for the poor and disavantaged more than any other party, should have recognized this. Because they didn't, for them it will be a vote loser.
