RESIDENTS have been venting online after images of discarded Christmas rubbish strewn around the road was captured in Darnley.

The pictures, which shows used Christmas gift bags, toy packaging and cardboard left on the ground, were posted by Darnley resident, Pauline McGinley Gilgallon, posted the pictures on Boxing Day morning after visiting the busy supermarket at 10:30am:

"Two men were clearing everything up and bagging the stuff that was left and putting it in Sainsbury’s cages to be taken away but they said it’s like this every year.

"They wanted to know if my husband was there to dump more stuff and were relieved to see he was there for the bottle bank.

"The litter problem in this area is horrendous at the moment and I’m frankly really fed up with it."

Glasgow City Council has previously advised residents to dispose of festive waste at any recycling centres - Dawsholm, Easter Queenslie, Polmadie and Shieldhall Recycling Centre - which are open 8am to 8pm everyday apart from January 1st.

Advice for recycling cards and gift bags was also posted on their website, saying: "Plain Christmas cards can be placed in the blue recycling bins, although cards decorated with glitter cannot as this potentially causes problems at the paper mill. Please check high street retail outlets and supermarkets who may have collections points for cards.

"Please remove any ribbons, bows, or other adornments from wrapping paper before placing in blue bin."

The council also advised on how to know whether wrapping paper for the bin was able to be recycled - paper with plastic film is currently not recyclable, saying: "The scrunch test is a simple way to determine whether wrapping paper is made from plastic film.

"Simply scrunch it in your hand - if it remains 'scrunched' it can be recycled; if it springs back it is probably plastic film and not recyclable."
