A GLASGOW institution that has been baking success since 1965 has thrown its weight - and a load of dough - behind our Bank.On.Us campaign.

Mortons Rolls bosses were inspired by the work the Glasgow Times were doing with the campaign - aimed to help members of the local public during their time in need.

So far, the generous support of our readers has led to more than 5000 people able to be helped with thousands of bags being collected.

The donations will help foodbanks cope with an expected increase in demand during the festive period.

After seeing the success of what they describe as an "important" campaign, bosses at Mortons got on board.

Between Thursday, December 12 and Friday, December 20, the bakery firm delivered 1500 packets of six fresh rolls to a number of foodbanks across the city.

Alastair Sherry, managing director at Mortons Rolls, said: "We decided to help and drop off rolls to help as part of the Bank On Us campaign, we wanted to help as much as we can.

"It’s great to have two great Glasgow institutions, the Glasgow Evening Times and Mortons Rolls, teaming together like this to do the right thing.

"The people are the foodbanks were incredibly grateful for our support – they were overwhelmed really with what we could provide."

Mortons bakers supplied a total of 9000 rolls to be divided between the various foodbanks - with some even having to turn away the goods because there were too many.

"Thankfully, the staff at Glasgow Times had provided us with a list, so whenever we had too many for one location we were able to hand them over to another," Alastair confirmed.

He added: "We feel that it is really important that we give back to the community.

"We have been around for a long time now and people really know our product, it’s popular in the city and this was a great way to do our bit.

"All year round it is important to help out but it seems to become even more so around this time of year, it’s a tough time for many.

"People are struggling, so it’s good to try and make things easier for them."

The success of our campaign has already been highlighted at Holyrood by Glasgow MSP Anas Sarwar.

He said: “The cabinet secretary and I would prefer that food banks were not needed, but while they are we must support them.

“Will she join me in congratulating the Glasgow Evening Times on its “Bank On Us” campaign, which has resulted in more than 5,000 bags being delivered to food banks across the city?"

“Does she agree that that demonstrates the generosity, not just of the people of Glasgow, but of the people of Scotland, who are supporting people who have been left vulnerable?"
