ScotRail has prompted outrage on social media after cancelling three Sunday morning services between major towns and cities in Scotland.

The operator tweeted after 10pm on Saturday night to say that the next day's services were cancelled.

The 0933 service from Edinburgh to North Berwick, 0945 service from Tweedback to Edinburgh and 1158 service from Wick to Inveness have been cancelled.

One user took to Twitter to call the cancellations a "shambles".

Passengers travelling from Edinburgh to North Berwick or Wick to Inverness can use a replacement bus service.

Passengers planning to travel from Tweedbank to Edinburgh will have to wait an hour for the next service.

ScotRail apologised for the cancellations.

The news came after the operator was told by the Scottish Government to produce a remedial plan to improve its services and reduce cancellations.

On Friday, ScotRail reported an official improvement in punctuality, despite the cancellation woes.

82.4 per cent of trains arrived at their destination within five minutes of the timetable in the four weeks to 5 January.

A faulty overhead wire at Hyndland in Glasgow and shortages of Edinburgh-based drivers and conductors were blamed for the cancellations.
