A CRAFT beer delivery service is “not the type of product” that would be abused as a dial-a-booze, a lawyer told the council.

Merchant City Brewing Co. suppressed fears from the Licensing Board that its new delivery service will be used as a late-night source of drink.

One of its featured products includes a “lightly toasted Vienna and Munich malts give a copper colour and a complex, malty profile”.

But according to lawyer Stephen McGowan, late night drinkers are unlikely to be too interested in such beverages.

He said: “The price of these beers will not be such that it will attract people at 10pm wanting to buy alcohol.

“I don’t think it’s the type of product they would go to if they wanted to.”

Only a few years old, the brewery is growing and is seeking to sell directly to customers.

The firm produces  a range of craft beers and ales at Oakbank Industrial Estate between Maryhill and Possilpark.

Key products are Indian Pale Ale (IPA), Vienna Lager, American Pale Ale, even a gluten free light ale and more.

Representatives appeared before the Glasgow City Council Licensing Board on Friday to make their case on Friday.

The council granted the company permission after questioning them about security on site, Challenge 25 and dial-a-booze concerns.

Margaret Morgan Linn SNP councillor, said: “I’m familiar with G20 customers and my fear is it could become a dial-a-drink situation.”

Mr McGowan said: “I’m well aware of the roles regarding delivery, and a dial-a-drink service is the furthest away from what we’re doing here.

“We are a working brewery looking to deliver our services to customers who want to drink those kinds of drinks.”

But Ms Moran said: “Is there a danger on how that could be perceived?”

It was then Mr McGowan told how he doesn’t think the target market is the same as dial-a-booze users in the area.

Councillor Tony Curtis highlighted crime figures in the area and posed a question regarding security of the industrial park.

Mr McGowan added: “The numbers are quite high but didn’t relate to this particular facility.

“It is a huge catchment area of antisocial behaviour that report relates to.

“It seems to me the crime is not actually related to the industrial estate but other areas.

“The company has been there for two years and there have been no incidents.”
