EX-RANGERS legend Fernando Ricksen has claimed he’s gaining strength in his battle against deadly Motor Neurone Disease by eating two steaks every night.

Ricksen, 41, told how wife Veronika, 32, chops up the meal before bedtime and feeds him in his wheelchair. And he believes the meaty regime packed with protein and vital calories is helping his body hold off the muscle-wasting condition.

Speaking to The Scottish Sun, he said: “I have had a very good year health-wise. There’s been no major development in my symptoms. I’m actually feeling quite stable.

“A great thing is that I can still eat what I want and I eat two steaks a day at the moment.

“Of course I eat them in small pieces, but I’m still able to eat them.

“I have both of them at night and since I’ve started doing it I feel a lot better.

“I like the meat obviously and need it for the calories.

“I’m also happy that I can still eat a lot of chocolate and other sweet things.”

Ricksen is convinced he can defy docs – who gave him months to live in 2013 – and beat the condition by taking inspiration from against-the-odds wins during his playing career, including Gers’ last-day title triumph in 2005.

The former midfielder said: “I’m still hopeful for the future. I’ve been in impossible situations before and came out as winner.

“Remember Helicopter Sunday when Rangers won the league?

“I will win this fight. I’m pretty sure about it."

Despite his positive outlook, the former Light Blues captain told how he’s considering donating his body to science after his death to help find a cure.

He said: “I’m still thinking about it and discussing it with my family.

“It’s still unbelievable there is still no medicines for MND yet.

“Of course, everyone — doctors and researchers — are doing their best to find a cure for MND. I know they make good steps with research, but we need to make more progress in this.

“Also for the next generation, maybe I can help with that, to make that process faster.

“But to be honest I’m not there yet as I feel I have still a lot of years left.”
