IT'S nearly time for Glasgow's annual Potato Day.

Glasgow Allotments Forum will be holding this year's event on Sunday, February 18 in the Reidvale Neighbourhood Centre.

The day will be open to anyone who wishes to grow their own potatoes and is on from 11am to 3pm.

You can buy as little as one seed potato or as much as a 2.5kg bag if you want and experts will be on hand to give advice about both growing and cooking the 50 varieties on sale.

Jan MacDonald, Glasgow Potato Day organiser, said: “Last year's event was a surprise hit with schools and people who had never grown potatoes before.

“The sheer joy and excitement as children scrabble in the earth to discover real potatoes beats the opening of a frozen chip packet by miles.”

The nation’s favourite crop is easy to grow in bags or containers, in a back court or balcony as well as in more traditional ways in back gardens or on an allotment.

There will also be cafe serving coffee, tea and a variety of home baking.

Jan added:“During one memorable year, crawling up one lane, along a snow covered M9 to get to Dunblane, I thought to myself, 'Surely with number of people in Glasgow we could have our own potato day?'

"The rest, as they say, is history.

"This year will be the sixth annual potato day held in Glasgow, hopefully with many more to come."
