A 'remarkable' Second World War RAF veteran has celebrated his 100th birthday.

RAF engineer George Johnson, who is a member of the Cumbernauld Seniors Club', celebrated the milestone recently.

The much-loved man joined the force in 1944.

To celebrate his birthday, Lynne Morrison, the community champion at Asda in Cumbernauld, who volunteers at the club, presented George with a cake.

Glasgow Times:

Lynne said: "When our colleagues heard about this event they asked if we could provide the birthday cakes to help celebrate George's remarkable achievement and we were honoured to do so.

"On behalf of all of the colleagues at Asda Cumbernauld, we would like to wish George a very, very happy birthday."

The club hosted a celebration for George at the Royal British Legion Scotland Cumbernauld branch.

The event was attended by members of George's family and local dignitaries.

The centenarian was presented with a special birthday card on behalf of King Charles and Queen Camilla from the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire Ann Walker and a Victory Coin for his service to the country by Stewart Walker - area Vice-Chairperson of the Royal British Legion Scotland.

Stewart said: "He really is a remarkable gentleman, a real character and he doesn't look 100 at all."
