A primary school in Cumbernauld has received almost £3,000 in funding boost from the UKSE.

A total of £2,500 was given to Condorrat Primary School for its Eco Warriors campaign to enhance the school's sustainability efforts.

The funding will push the school's ambition to become an official Eco Schools partner, instilling lifelong positive skills in its pupils.

It has formed an Eco Warriors committee, which includes a total of 12 pupils from years P4 to P6.

The committee will establish an action plan in collaboration with the teaching staff and it involves four key objectives, which are tackling environmental issues, nurturing nature, enhancing biodiversity, and minimising energy and waste consumption.

So far, the pupils have set up improved recycling facilities across the school, with plans to introduce a new compost bin system for food waste generated during break or lunch times.

The committee also plans to conduct activities that would benefit the wider community, such as litter picks.

This effort is geared towards helping the school earn the prestigious Green Flag status, an accolade given by Eco Schools.

Craig Collin, teacher at Condorrat Primary School, said: “Helping reduce our footprint on the environment is incredibly important to us as a school.

"Through a dedicated programme of activities as led by our Eco Warriors, we’re striving for Green Flag status to underline our commitment to sustainability.

“The funding from UKSE is greatly appreciated and will help us to significantly advance our eco-friendly practices across the school for pupils, staff and the wider community to benefit from.”

UKSE launched its sustainability strategy in 2023, allocating funding to businesses seeking support for green projects.

Michele Johnson, administrator at UKSE, said: "It’s brilliant to see the emphasis that Condorrat Primary School is placing on becoming more sustainable, this aligns with UKSE’s Sustainable Development Goals, which include good health and wellbeing, quality education and climate action."
